The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.
I worked a Scrum Master for couple of projects, to be honest we have to be highly motivated and self-starter… Scrum Master is required mostly in Agile Methodology, to manage the process & how information is exchanged. I use to run daily stand-up meetings, understand & remove obstacles to guide team when escalation is required. During the daily meetings, we need to ask the team members these three questions:
- What did you do yesterday?
- What will you do today?
- Are there any impediments in your way?
In order perform scrum master role, we should have excellent facilitation skills, with ability to lead by serving, also needs to have a low personal ego, but high pride in building team & of-course excellent relationship building skills.
Practically, skilled Scrum Master does not need to be a subject matter expert (SME), however it is required to Guide the team on self-organizing to fill in the intentional gaps, supporting and educating the Product Owner, especially with respect to grooming and maintaining the product backlog.
More or less…it is required to facilitate all aspects of the Scrum framework, including sprint planning sessions, backlog grooming sessions, daily scrums, sprint reviews and sprint retrospectives.
